Hurricane Beryl - July 2024

Hurricane Beryl, which recently passed through the United States, has made history as the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic Basin. Beryl originated from a tropical wave off the coast of Africa on June 25, 2024, and rapidly intensified after forming on June 28. It reached its peak intensity with sustained winds of 165 mph on July 2, making it the strongest July Atlantic hurricane by wind speed. Beryl's rapid intensification and early formation are attributed to unusually warm water temperatures in the Atlantic.

Hurricane Beryl

The path of Hurricane Beryl was extensive and destructive. After making landfall on the island of Carriacou in Grenada as a high-end Category 4 hurricane, it continued to intensify as it moved through the Caribbean Sea. Beryl then made landfall in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico, as a Category 2 hurricane before weakening over the Yucatán Peninsula. It re-entered the Gulf of Mexico, briefly re-intensified, and made its final landfall near Matagorda, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm continued to move northeastward, bringing heavy rain and severe weather to the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast United States.

The damage assessments from Hurricane Beryl reveal widespread devastation across multiple regions. In the Caribbean, islands such as Carriacou and Petite Martinique experienced near-total destruction, with significant damage to infrastructure and agriculture. In Texas, the storm caused severe flooding, power outages, and damage to homes and businesses. Vermont and other parts of the Northeast faced heavy rainfall and flooding, prompting requests for federal disaster declarations. The overall impact of Hurricane Beryl is estimated to exceed $6 billion in damages, with significant recovery efforts underway in the affected areas.
