Hurricane Milton - October 2024

PPA Can Help Those Affected In Florida by Hurricane Milton With Their Insurance Claims

Hurricane Milton

Updated October 9, 2024

Hurricane Milton is churning towards South Florida as a formidable Category 4 storm, with sustained winds reaching a staggering 155 mph. It poses a severe threat to the central west coast, particularly the Sarasota region where landfall is anticipated after 2 a.m. ET on Thursday. Evacuations are underway as residents brace for what could be the most destructive hurricane to hit the Tampa Bay area in over a century. The National Weather Service emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating, "If you are in the Storm Surge Warning area, this is an extremely life-threatening situation and you should evacuate if ordered to do so by local officials."

The National Hurricane Center warns of life-threatening storm surges, potentially reaching 10 to 15 feet along the coast near Sarasota. Heavy rainfall is also expected, with up to 18 inches in some areas, leading to potential flash floods and river flooding across the Florida peninsula.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for vulnerable areas in and around Tampa Bay, as authorities urge residents to seek higher ground. Tampa Mayor Jane Castor stated in a CNN interview on Monday that there is a possibility of a direct hit and urged people to take storm warnings and evacuation protocols seriously.

"Helene was a wake-up call. This is literally catastrophic. And I can say, without any dramatization whatsoever, if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you're going to die," Castor said.

Airports are canceling flights, schools as far south as Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties are announcing closures, and theme parks are shutting down in anticipation of the storm's impact. Highways are jammed with evacuees, and gas shortages are reported in some areas as people prepare for the worst.

9 Essential Tips to Prepare, Minimize Damage

  1. Freeze water in Ziploc bags 3/4 full to keep your freezer and refrigerator cold during a power outage.
  2. Store essential papers and valuables in heavy-duty trash bags in secure locations.
  3. Stock up on non-perishable food, water, and medications.
  4. Fill containers with tap water if bottled water is scarce.
  5. Park your car in a safe location away from trees and flood zones.
  6. Recharge batteries for power tools and portable chargers.
  7. Book a hotel directly if you plan to evacuate.
  8. Fill up your gas tank and refill essential prescriptions.
  9. Gather supplies for pets, children, toddlers, and babies, and make arrangements for pet care if you evacuate.
